Don't let his illusions fool you. Learn how to track the Reed Devil's movements and counter his high-speed shadow strikes.
Boss Guide: The Reed Devil (The Hidden Assassin)
The Reed Devil is a challenging boss encounter in the Frozen Soul Mountain area of Hernand. This fight is designed to test your reaction speed and your ability to track invisible targets. He is small, fast, and uses a mystical "Shadow Step" to teleport around the battlefield. This boss has 3 full health bars and requires plenty of healing items.

🛡️ Preparation
- Recommended Level: 18+
- Best Weapon: Dual Blades (for fast reaction hits) or Sword & Shield (for the 360-degree block).
- Essential Items: * Perception Elixirs: Increases the visual clarity of moving objects.
- Stamina Potions: You will be dodging and sprinting constantly to keep up with his teleports.
⚔️ The Gimmick: Tracking the Grass
The Reed Devil's most dangerous trait is his Invisibility. He will dissolve into a cloud of straw and reappear behind you for a backstab.
- How to Find Him: Watch the Golden Reeds. Even when he is invisible, his footsteps will cause the tall grass to sway and flatten in a path toward you.
- The Sound of Bells: Listen closely. Right before he reappears for an attack, you will hear a faint, metallic "chime" or "rustle." That is your cue to dodge or block.
⚔️ Attack Patterns & Counters
1. The Shadow Backstab (Phase 1)
He teleports and immediately attempts a dual-blade thrust at your back.
- Reaction: Do not try to run. Wait for the chime, then perform a Side Dodge. If you are fast enough, you can hit him during his recovery frames.
2. The Straw Whirlwind & Totems (Phase 2)
The Reed Devil spins his twin blades, creating a localized vortex that pulls you in. At the same time, he summons 5 Straw Totems around the arena and becomes completely immune until all are destroyed.
- Destroying Totems: Use Focused Shot or Charged Shot to safely destroy totems from range. For a faster (but riskier) approach, Turning Slash (Light + Heavy Attack simultaneously) shreds totems at melee range — just be ready to dodge the boss's clones between swings.
- Vortex Escape: Use your Shield Charge to bash through the wind and stagger him, or use the Grappling Hook to pull yourself toward a distant tree to escape the AOE.
3. The Illusion Clones (Phase 3)
When his health drops below 40%, he will create three straw clones.
- The Trick: Only the "Real" Reed Devil will cause the grass to move when he shifts. The clones are stationary or move in fixed patterns. Destroy the clones with one hit to clear the screen.
🤼 The Winning Strategy: "The Grab-and-Slam"
The Reed Devil is fragile compared to other bosses. The best way to win is to Force a Physical Encounter.
- Parry the Dash: If you time a Perfect Parry on his shadow dash, he will stay visible for an extended period.
- The Grab: Immediately press E (Grab). Because he is small, Kliff can easily pick him up and slam him into the ground.
- Ground-and-Pound: Once he is pinned, he cannot teleport. Unleash your most powerful combos here.
🎁 Rewards & Loot
- Sunset Reed Cloth Gloves: A unique armor piece with high agility bonuses.
- Devil's Straw Braid: A rare material used for crafting.
- Ancient Silver Coins: High-value currency.
Hunting Checklist
- Watch the Reeds: His movements always leave a trail in the grass. 🌾
- Listen for the Chime: It signals his reappearance. 🔔
- Don't stay still: Standing still is an invitation for a backstab. 🏃
- Use Grapples: Pin him to the ground to prevent him from vanishing. 🤼
