Mettle & Synergy: The Heart of Mercenary Combat

In Crimson Desert, Kliff is powerful, but he is never truly alone. The core of high-level play revolves around the Mettle System—a resource that powers your most destructive abilities and allows you to coordinate attacks with your Greymane companions.

The full release introduces the Tag Team system, allowing you to summon companions like Damiane to fight alongside you in the open world, not just switch between them.

Mastering this synergy is what transforms a chaotic skirmish into a tactical masterpiece.

1. 🌀 Understanding the Mettle Bar

The yellow bar located just below your Stamina is your Mettle. Unlike Stamina, it doesn't just recover over time; you have to earn it.

• How to Build Mettle: * Landing successful Light and Heavy attacks.
  • Performing Perfect Parries (grants a massive Mettle boost).
  • Executing Finishing Moves (Suplexes, ground-and-pound).
• What Mettle Does:
  • Powers "Signature Skills" (e.g., Lightning Pierce).
  • Triggers Mercenary Synergy attacks.
  • Can be consumed to instantly refill Stamina (if you have the Mettle Burst skill).

2. 🤝 Mercenary Synergy (Co-op Attacks)

When you have at least one bar of Mettle and a squad member nearby, you can trigger a Synergy Attack.

Using the Tag Team System:

• Summon Companion: Hold the Up directional button to open character selection, then select "Summon" to bring your companion into the world.
• Gather Party: Hold the Menu button to group your party together. Your companion will now fight alongside you during exploration and side content.
• Note: Companions cannot join main story quests (designed exclusively for Kliff), but they excel in open-world combat, bandit camp clearing, and exploration.

Common Synergy Combinations:

• The Shield Wall (Kliff + Vanguard): Kliff locks shields with a tanky mercenary, creating a frontal barrier that reflects projectiles and staggers charging enemies.
• The Hunter's Trap (Kliff + Archer): Kliff performs a high-kick to launch an enemy into the air, and your archer automatically follows up with a flurry of arrows.
• The Medic's Boon (Kliff + Support): Consume Mettle to have your medic toss a healing smoke bomb at your location while you continue fighting.

3. 🛡️ Squad Formations: Tactical Positioning

You can give basic commands to your Greymanes using the D-Pad or Quick-Keys (1-4).

1. "Form Up": Mercenaries cluster around Kliff. Best for defensive play.
2. "Scatter": Mercenaries seek individual targets. Best for clearing out many weak enemies.
3. "Focus Fire": All active mercenaries target the enemy Kliff is currently locked onto. Essential for Boss Fights.

Tag Team Benefits:

• Companions mount automatically when Kliff gets on his horse
• They teleport to stay near you when terrain creates gaps
• Contribute meaningfully in fights against bandit camps and mob-heavy areas
• Cannot switch characters during active combat, but can switch freely while roaming

4. 📈 Mettle Management Strategy

Don't just spend Mettle as soon as you get it. Follow these pro-tips:

• Save for the Stagger: Wait until a Boss's stagger meter is almost full, then unleash all your Mettle-based skills for a massive damage burst.
• The "I-Frame" Hack: Triggering a Co-op Synergy often grants Kliff a brief window of invulnerability (I-Frames) during the cinematic animation. Use this to avoid a big boss hit you can't dodge.
