Mercenary Management: Building Your Ultimate Warband

In Crimson Desert, you play as Kliff, the leader of the Greymanes. Unlike other RPGs where companions are just side characters, your mercenary squad is a fundamental part of your combat power, economy, and world exploration.

Managing your troupe effectively is the difference between being a wandering warrior and a legendary commander.

1. 🤝 How to Recruit Your First Mercenaries

The Greymanes start scattered. Your first goal is to bring the family back together.

  • Story Recruitment: Following the main quest "The Scattered Greymanes" will automatically reintroduce key members like the healer or the heavy vanguard.
  • Tavern Recruitment: Visit major hubs like Hernand. Look for NPCs with a unique "Mercenary" icon above their heads.
  • Side Quests: Some of the best specialists (like Master Archers or Alchemists) are only recruitable after you solve their personal problems or save their village from bandits.

2. 🛡️ Squad Roles & Synergy

A balanced squad ensures Kliff doesn't get overwhelmed in large-scale skirmishes.

  • Vanguards (Tanks): Essential for drawing aggro. Equip them with shields to create a frontline while you flank.
  • Specialists: These mercenaries use traps, smoke bombs, or healing totems. Always keep at least one Medic in your active party.
  • Damage Dealers: Archers and Two-handed warriors who clean up the enemies you stagger with your grappling moves.

3. 🍖 Morale and Maintenance

Mercenaries aren't robots—they have needs.

  • The Morale Bar: If morale drops (due to hunger or constant defeats), your mercenaries might perform poorly or even temporarily leave your party.
  • Feeding the Troops: Cook large batches of food at campfires. Sharing a high-quality meal boosts squad morale and provides a temporary XP buff to everyone.
  • Payment: Keep enough Silver in your treasury. Mercenaries require a weekly wage based on their rank.

4. ⚒️ Upgrading Your Mercenary Caravan

Your caravan is your mobile base of operations.

  • Storage Expansion: Invest in larger wagons to store more loot and crafting materials.
  • The Forge: Upgrade your caravan's mobile forge to allow weapon repairs and basic armor enhancements while you're in the wilderness.
  • The Infirmary: Reduces the time injured mercenaries need to recover before they can join the fight again.

5. 💰 Sending Mercenaries on Missions

When you aren't using certain members in your active party, keep them busy!

  • Mercenary Board: In cities, you can pick up "Sub-contracts." Send your benched mercenaries to complete these for passive income, rare materials, and squad XP.
  • Risk vs. Reward: Higher-tier missions have a chance of failure. Always check the "Success Probability" before sending your favorites on a dangerous hunt.

Commander's Checklist

  1. Always have a Healer in your active squad. 🧪
  2. Check Morale at campfires regularly. 🥘
  3. Upgrade your Wagon for extra storage early on. 🎒
  4. Send idle mercenaries on missions for passive Silver. 💰
