Gear Enhancement & Refinement: Crafting God-Tier Equipment

A deep dive into Pywel's equipment system (2026 Full Release). Learn how to refine weapons and armor to +10, Abyss Core mechanics, and material farming.
Gear Enhancement: Mastering the Forge (Full Release)
In Crimson Desert (Full Release 2026), your gear is a living project. The game calls upgrading "Refinement"—and understanding this system is essential for tackling endgame content.
Unlike many RPGs, equipment weight does not affect movement speed—plate armor moves as fast as leather. This means you can prioritize defense without sacrificing mobility.
🔨 1. The Refinement System
Equipment can be upgraded at any Blacksmith. There are 10 Refinement levels (+1 to +10) for each item.
Where to Upgrade
- Location: Blacksmith in the middle of Hernand town (starting area)
- Cost: No money required—only materials
How to Check Requirements
- Open inventory
- Click "Inspect" on an item
- Click "Refinement Information" to view required materials
🧬 2. Material Requirements by Equipment Type
Different equipment types require different materials for refinement:
| Equipment Type | Required Materials | How to Obtain |
|---|---|---|
| Plate Armor & Weapons | Ores (Iron Ore, Copper Ore, etc.) | Mine ore deposits on mountain walls with Pickaxe, or use Force Palm to break ore |
| Wooden Shields | Wood | Chop trees with Axe (buy from Provisioner's Shop) |
| Leather Armor & Jewelry | Hides, Bones | Hunt animals in forests and skin them |
| Soft Clothes | Cloth Pieces, Fleece | Buy from Provisioner's Shop or loot from bandits |
Tool Acquisition
- Pickaxe: Buy from Provisioner's Shop (house across from blacksmith)
- Axe: Buy from Provisioner's Shop
💎 3. The Abyss Core System (Full Release)
The most significant gear system in the full release. Abyss Cores are socketable modifiers that dramatically alter equipment performance.
How Abyss Cores Work
- Sockets: Armor pieces have 1-3 Abyss Core sockets (chest pieces can have up to 3)
- Swappable: Cores can be inserted and removed freely
- Stacking: Effects from multiple cores stack

🆕 Full Release Changes (2026)
What's Different from Demo/Early Access
- No Enhancement Failure: Unlike the demo system, refinement in the full release doesn't destroy items on failure
- Abyss Cores Replace Affixes: The random affix system from early versions has been replaced with the socketable Abyss Core system
- No Equipment Weight: All armor types move at the same speed—no slow-rolling in heavy plate
- Universal +10 Cap: All equipment refines to the same maximum level
📋 Material Farming Tips
Early Game Farming Spots
- Iron Ore: Mountain walls around Hernand
- Copper Ore: Higher elevation areas, use Pickaxe or Force Palm
- Wood: Forests surrounding Hernand
- Hides: Hunt wolves and deer in the woods
Mid Game Efficiency
- Batch Crafting: Gather materials in bulk before visiting the blacksmith
- Tool Maintenance: Keep Pickaxe and Axe repaired
- Fast Travel: Use discovered waypoints to quickly reach farming spots
